I'm a special tool: a talk wench. [Torque wrench, in case you thought it was a typo.] But I do NOT make the noise...

No doubt electric vehicles are the future (yawn) but I like to think that there will always be obsessed nutters in sheds and garages all over the world prepared to keep the old skills alive. Grease and oil and gears and plugs and pistons and skinned knuckles and kettles and tea and biscuits... Oh yeah. Exhibit A: the song 'Red Barchetta' by Rush. :-)

I'm sorry but I can't understand why didn't you change the bearings after all that work, what was the point of rebuilding the transmission. Don't get me wrong, I highly respect your work and skill level, I am just puzzled

Did you do anything to the gearsets. Degrease etc?

Did you account for the 10mm socket at the end? 😁 excellent video, keep them coming and keep up the good work. By far my favourite FIpost channel!

I'm currently trying to put the gearbox back on the engine of my ST205, and I've now decided that removing the transfer box is going to make lfe a bit easier. This video is very well done, thank you!

43:50 I love seeing gears! They are so beautiful. What wonderful engineering. It is a good thing that Nik has to struggle to get the gears to mesh. You do not want too much play.

LOL. At 24:05 Nik says, "...needs a special tool, which is not available, so I had to make one. But will it work?" Ha, ha, ha. I have not watched Nik try his hand-made tool yet, but I am going to predict that the answer is "yes."

The chances of everybody here choosing a Toyota E15 gearbox when faced with the choice will probably increase thanks to this video. For me, it's like: Okay, I'll go get find an engine that fits this gearbox, and find a car to put it all in lol

Takes a special man to make all these tools just to have a look in his gear box. Wish I lived in a time where actual mechanics worked not just fitters. Unfortunately a dying breed
69uremum 3 kuukautta sitten
If you hold the special tool you made at 90deg to the lever wouldn't the torque value be the same or very close since you arent adding leverage.

I am amazed at just how much I enjoyed this. It was wonderful. Those gears are beautiful. The complexity of the "simple" gearbox is a sight to see. The culmination of centuries of gear making, starting with church clocks. Thank you Nik & Rich for taking the time to make this video.

Technical Question - Under the immense stress of such a delicate procedure, is it critical for the sanity of Nick's Mighty Mechanical Mind to use a 'Dusky Pink & Green' tablecloth as the backdrop to such an operation ??

At 55:48 -re-installing the gear selector mechanism -whats' that extra nut underneath the bolt head? Bolt too long? At 3:10 when removing it I can see at least one of those bolts is shorter than the others. Related question: did you happen to weigh all the gearbox/diff hardware when you had it out? I've never done anything remotely like this and the sheer quantity of bolts is surprising.

Ever heard the adage - if it ain't broke? Ringing at 110 db, especially at 30.50. The episode painfully reminds me of my Father and Brother rebuilding the latters Minor 1000 gearbox approx 50 years ago. On reasembly tested each gear selection - all ok - first road test, all went well untill the rear wheels locked up with the box selecting 2nd and 4th gears simultaneously...... off to the breakers for a correctly assembled gearbox!

Either that or the alternator bracket bolts there and the original bolts were too short so we plated longer bolts and used a nut to tighten the bolts up without them bottoming out in the blind hole until the sealant had gone off. Is that okay?
